Singapore Pavilion at Yeosu World Expo 2012

PARADOX-ITY: A CITY OF CREATIVE PARADOXES

The World Expo 2021 was themed ‘The Living Ocean and Coast’ to illuminate humankind’s knowledge and technological advancement to identity ways to resolve challenges faced by ocean and coasts. With the coming into effect the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1993, the ocean has emerged as an important element that feature among the profound problems faced by many societies including resources, food, space, and the environment.

As a small, island island city-state, the theme profoundly resonates with Singapore’s narrative. The theme is developed as a vehicle to represent Singapore’s efforts in promoting a balanced development in achieving a modern urban environment while also preserving our oceans and coasts. Singapore owes its genesis to our maritime seascape: a city-port born of natural deep harbour, nurtured by creative hands that shaped our urban landscape, and sustained by the sensitive integration of technology and humanity.

Zarch Collaboratives’ participation in the Expo entails the conceptualisation and construction of the pavilion following a narrative, as well as the curation of the programme throughout the duration.

The theme ‘Paradox-ity: A City of Creative Paradoxes’ was developed to represent Singapore as a model living city, drawing focus to Singapore’s pursuit of balance between urban development and environmental responsibilities. The intention was to share with the world this small island’s big dreams and what it has gone through to make these tangible realities.
