Situated on a corner lot, fronting the street on three sides, Bedok Cinema is a commercial complex featuring a unique façade articulation produced by the deliberate convergence of both program and context. The upper segment housing a cinema is expressed as a monolithic curtain-walled block whose lower floors have been ‘carved’ to create inviting openings and entrances, revealing retail activities within. Sculptural planters and greenery complete the visually-arresting assemblage, accentuating a contrast between the glass and the faceted, protruding form, complemented by an earthy palette and natural tones. A human sense of scale is maintained that, integrating the architecture with the streetscape.
